Moving...

Dear readers,

I've decided to merge my blogs Dreaming in Kanji and China on My Mind into one blog focussing on East Asian cultures and languages : Eye on East Asia.

This blog will remain online but it will no longer be updated. You can continue reading about Chinese history, culture and language at Eye on East Asia.

That's all from me for now. Feel free to add the new blog to your bookmarks.

"The Last Millennium of Chinese History" Lecture Series

A three-part lecture series by Dr. Frederic Wakeman entitled The Last Millennium of Chinese History : Transition from Culture to Nation can be found on Youtube. The lectures focus on the Ming and Qing Dynasties and on the changing nature of Chinese cultural identity over the past thousand years.

I haven't had the chance to watch any of these lectures yet so I cannot vouch for the quality (or content) of the lectures. The videos, which were uploaded by the University of California, Berkeley, can be found below.

Lecture 1 : China's Longue Durée and the Mongolian Occupation

Lecture 2 : Ming Nativism and the Local Turn

Lecture 3 : Qing Culturalism and Manchu Identity

CCTV's Food Portal

For those of you who are looking for new recipes to try out or simply love reading about food, you might want to take a look at CCTV's food portal. The portal features hundreds of recipes, videos, cooking tips and food-related articles.

The only drawback is that the portal's content is only available in Chinese (simplified) so it will probably be of little use to those readers who cannot read Chinese. When I have the time, I'll translate some recipes and/or articles and post them on the blog.

Upcoming Chinese Events in the Netherlands

I've added a short list of upcoming Chinese/China-related events in the Netherlands to my side menu (it's just above the Twitter widget). I'll be updating the list as needed so that readers living in the Netherlands can keep track of these events.

Apologies to all those readers who are living outside of the Netherlands...

New Additions to My Library

Over the past couple of weeks, I've bought a few more books for my ever-growing collection of books on China and East Asia. English-language books are not too difficult to come by in the Netherlands but they can be quite expensive, so I generally tend to limit my book-buying to anything I can't find in the Amsterdam Public Library. Having said that, I often flout the rules when it comes to books on my favourite topics.

So without further ado, here are the books I bought :
The Chinese translation of The Diary of a Young Girl might seem a little out of place in this list. I bought a copy of it at the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam when I went there with a friend last week. I read the English-language edition when I was about 12 or 13 so I thought it was high time to read it again, albeit in different language.

Beijing Coma has been an excellent book so far (I still have a few chapters to go). I must admit that I haven't read much Chinese literature in translation. This is mostly due to the fact that few publishers seem to be interested in spending money on translating Chinese novels into English. Much of the "Chinese literature" I have read recently has been in the form of English-language "scar literature" or memoirs, such as Anchee Min's Red Azalea and Li Cunxin's Mao's Last Dancer. The only other Chinese novel I have read in translation was Gao Xingjian's Soul Mountain, which I didn't particularly enjoy reading, despite its fame as Nobel Prize winning novel.

Have any of you read any Chinese novels in translation? Are there any that you would recommend reading?

Cooking Blogs for the Masses

One of the best ways to build upon one's language skills and broaden one's vocabulary is to read blogs written in your source language, especially if they are on a subject of personal interest. I love to cook and am fond of Chinese home-cooking so I enjoy reading blogs about cooking and I'm always on the look-out for new recipes to try out at home.

Here's a short list of some of the cooking and food blogs I follow :

If you know of any other interesting food and/or cooking blogs which aren't on the list above, feel free to let me know.
